One of the questions I am asked the most is ,“what exactly is a soundbath or sound therapy?”

For both soundbaths and sound therapy, the instruments used are ancient healing instruments, such as gongs, crystal singing bowls, Himalayan singing bowls, drums and chimes, and are played using soothing techniques that are designed to bring about a deep state of relaxation by helping the lower brainwave frequencies to take over. This allows our brain and our bodies to speak to each other, to move away from the higher brainwave frequencies (the “fight or flight” mode that we are so often in), and to enter a state of “rest and digest”. In this state, our blood pressure lowers, our heartbeat slows down and we are less in a state of “doing” and more in a state of “being”.
It is a bit like when you are daydreaming or like the state between being awake and asleep just as you are about to doze off. During this time, you have the potential to feel deeply relaxed, peaceful and calm, and to feel a greater sense of self-awareness and connection. Some of the benefits of a sound session can include:
-
Improved sleep
-
Reduced anxiety
-
Lower stress levels
-
Pain management
-
Better concentration
-
Clarity of thought
-
Emotional strength
-
Balance

Many clients say that they experience a greater sense of calm,
self-awareness, and connection.
Sound Therapy and Soundbaths
Sound Therapy

Although sound therapy can be provided in a group setting, it is normally provided as a one to one session, and is ideal for clients who have something specific they would like to work through, something that is getting in the way of flow in their life, for example, anxiety, sleep deprivation, fatigue, stress, grief, anything that is causing them a challenge.
For the sound therapy sessions I provide, reflective practices are used with the client before, during and after the session to help them to contemplate, consider and reflect on areas in their life that may be having an impact on their health and wellbeing. Clients are invited to reflect on this as they listen to the instruments being played during the session.

Instruments may be used on or off the body, depending on the treatment required.
Soundbaths

Soundbaths (also sometimes referred to as gongbaths, sound meditations, and sound spas) are typically provided in a group environment (whether at, or as part of, a regular monthly event, or at a privately arranged event).
Nothing is required from a participant during the session other than to wear warm layers, and to lay on the floor on a yoga mat (or on a chair if more comfortable). Participants are invited to make themselves comfortable and cosy with blankets and pillows as they close their eyes and rest and allow themselves to tune in to the frequencies, and to sense the vibrations, of the various instruments as they are being played around them.

Soundbaths can be a great introduction to sound treatments for people who have never experienced sound therapy. No two soundbaths are ever the same.
